23 Things - The Finale

10 or so weeks; 23 Things

There were times it was hard to fit it in to a normal workday routine.
But overall, it was worth it.

The week spent on digital images was probably one of the most informative sessions - and one that I will probably refer back to most often.
Goodreads and social reading - another good choice.
Stumbleupon - I love it.
Will I ever be a regular user of twitter? Probably not, but it's good to know that if I want to, I can.

Thanks to all who helped to create this introductory session to these internet tools.
The Last Week!... and Thing Number 23..

StumbleUpon

This is pretty cool..I have heard of StumbleUpon before, but never used it. So, I created an account (one more account, one more password), and started stumbling.

With reading selected as a primary interest, this site came up - it's a list of 623 books, made up by compiling and consolidating several "Top 100" book lists. For all those book list lovers, this is fun to browse through.

I can see myself using this often.

Time for...The Happy Dance!!!
23 Things: Week 9 (and counting)

I am a bit behind again - just getting to Week 9 - Apps....

And my guilty secret is exposed - I do not own a smart phone. I don't even own a non-smart phone. I don't have an I-pad. Or an android tablet.
I am woefully behind the times - a relic, a dinosaur, a throw-back. How will I survive?
The odd thing is I don't really mind.
But in the spirit of 23 Things, I will begin my things this week. Overdrive - well, I have used it on a desktop computer. I do own a Kobo. I do download books from NBPLS - does that count?

Now, the BiblioNB app - my trusty co-worker agreed to let me experiment with her phone. It works well. I like it. If I had my own phone, I would download (and probably even use this!).

Maybe soon..the tempation is certainly there.

Week 8: Sharing and Scoop-It

I missed my 23 Things last week - so am just getting around to it now. It's a storm day here in New Brunswick, lots of libraries are closed. We were all able to make it into work here and although it hasn't been busy, it is surprising how many people are out and about.

So it is a good day to work on 23 Things. We have been introduced to Scoop-It before in training sessions, but I had never signed up  before. So I created an account and connected it to my twitter account. Searched around a bit, and scooped some articles on library programming and library promotion. It's always interesting to read about how they are doing things in other places.

After searching out a few things of interest on Scoop-It, I shared one of the videos about library programming on my twitter account.

There, week 8, making progress!

23 Things - Week 7 - Multimedia

Who doesn't love youtube? It's not even blocked by websense! It's like having a personal tutor to teach whatever you need to know - not sure about knitting socks? check out youtube. Want to know how to download a youtube video and change the format so you can play it? just ask youtube. This is a library video produced by Greene County Libraries in Ohio - and it's simply entertaining. I especially like the snippets from both Sesame Street and old Ghostbusters movie.

DIY Professional Development - I decided to try the Booklist Webinar Archive for something a little bit more educational. Their newest webinar was entitled YA Announcements: Need to Know Titles for Teens, and that caught my interest. Working in a public school library means that our YA section is well used, but keeping up with new series and titles for some very avid teen readers isn't always an easy thing to do. So here goes....What a great source of information it turned out to be. Short synopses of several new spring releases - lots of great books coming up - made a few notes of a few promising titles, and will keep them in mind for purchases later on.

23 Things - Week 5

Week 5 already - and this week's tasks are all to do with using pinterest.

I started using pinterest about a year ago, at the urging of one of our summer students. It is a great source of craft and display ideas, and although I don't use it a lot, I have created an account, and even a board. The board I call Library Programming Ideas, and use it to pin library related ideas on. It is great way to keep ideas that are out of season - if you see a Halloween idea in January, or a Christmas idea in July - and have a place to keep that idea where it can be retrieved - easily. We recently have hosted Blind Date With a Book, and used pinterest for a lot of our display ideas.

At the suggestion of our 23 Things trainers, I checked out the Moncton Library's boards, and decided to follow the one "What to Read Next". And then after seeing all the great reading suggestions, I decided to create a new board, just about reading.

All of these things can be overwhelming - the sheer volume of ideas, of "things I'd like to do". Will have to remember to check my feed more often!

Week 4

This is week four of "23 Things", and the topic is Images. And it is a great topic. We use images almost daily in everything we do - brochures, posters, facebook posts, and certainly want to use and credit them properly. The  Bad Cats image that I selected from Wikimedia Commons happened to come from Flickr, so i was able to use the ImageCodr.org site to generate the proper attribution.
I love it when there are websites that make things easy.

So, I went back and deleted the image on last week's twitter blog, and my next step will  be to check on the cartoon that I inserted in week 1's blog, and either delete it or find the proper attribution for it. Well, I went and checked - the image is not on wikimedia and is probably covered by copyright. So, best to simply delete it, and try to find another.

Thing Number 12 was to use the Wordle Image generator to create a word cloud - the first step was to start with a list. I decided to start with a list of things from my home town, since that is where my mind is right now.

So, hopefully, here is the image that wordle created for me;
